2. Introduction

Just like walking, billions of people move on a daily basis leveraging different modes of transportation, to get to school, work, shop and play. While the existing “move to earn” (M2E) industry is growing exponentially to incentivize healthy exercise (especially walking and running), no M2E project has yet been launched or captured user attention to incentivize green mobility. The ground transportation industry has been undergoing significant transformation in the past decade. The growing rates of urbanization have put pressure on public transit systems and created increasing problems with traffic congestion, challenges in finding parking spaces in urban areas and impacts on air contamination and CO2 emissions. In fact, transportation is the only industry that has failed to reduce its emission levels since 1990. WheelCoin is being developed to promote green mobility choices, something on top of the minds of policy makers as well as a growing number of residents and travelers as climate change becomes more front and center of public discourse. As can be seen in the figure, the ways people commute and travel around the globe vary greatly. This variation is caused by differences in location, culture and availability of greener alternatives.

It is also essential for WheelCoin to ensure that the younger generations are increasingly opting for car-free and greener lifestyles, choosing to live in cities where a car might not be a necessity at all and only renting cars (usually carshare) when needed. This generation is also the best target audience for a web3 M2E green mobility app that incentivizes such choices.
